Cahill Manufacturing Co., Inc. |
During the Second World War, the founder
of Cahill Manufacturing Co., Inc., William S. Cahill, told a friend who
was a retreader that as soon as the war was over he would design a machine
for him that would cut an hour to an hour and a half off the process of
retreading a tire. Time passed, the war ended and the promise was forgotten.
One day the friend reminded Cahill of the promise and he went to work
on the project at once.
Since Pete, as Cahill was called by family and friends, had always loved to invent things, this was right down his alley. In the late 1940's he developed the first spray cementing machine ever used in the retreading industry. This was the machine that he had promised his friend that would cut significant time from the retreading process. This process was successful and is still used today. |
| Pete Cahill worked
as an automobile mechanic, finally getting his own United Motors repair
shop which he named Cahill Motors. The first machines he designed and
invented were manufactured under the name of Cahill Motors in this shop.
In 1950 Cahill Manufacturing Co. was chartered with Pete Cahill as president.
He later sold Cahill Motors because the manufacturing facility was requiring
all of his time.
The company continued to grow and moved to a larger building in 1957. After moving once more into an even larger building, it finally constructed its own building and moved into it in 1959. The building has undergone expansion three times since 1959, the last of these in 1997. Pete's brother, Herb Cahill, was the secretary and treasurer of Cahill Motors and later became secretary of the new company. He remained with the company until his retirement. |
| In 1956 Pete's son Bob came on board as vice president and served in that capacity until Pete retired in 1970 at which time Bob became president and still serves in that capacity. |
